#202 : Le mur du son

Titre en VO : Wall of sound
Diffusion US : 25/09/94
Diffusion FR : 28/04/95

LOIS and CLARK walk to work.  She scans the morninq edition

of the paper as he sips his take-out cappucino.

                                             CLARK

                         So, you must be excited.

                                             LOIS

I don't know, Clark, walking to

work with you isn't really the

                         thrill it used to be.

                                             CLARK

No, no.  The Kerth Awards.  They

                         announce the nominees tomorrow.

                                             LOIS

                               (blase)

                         Oh, is that tomorrow?

                                             CLARK

                         C'mon, Lois, you get nominated

                         every year...

                                             LOIS

                         Not every year... just... every

                         year since I've been eligible.

                                             CLARK

I bet you get it for the Bolivian

                         Drug Cartel Series.

                                             LOIS

                         Well, the awards dinner's always

fun and it'd be a nice way to break

in that new black dress I picked

                         up.

                               (as they pass a FORMAL

                                WEAR STORE)

                         You rent your tux yet?

                                             CLARK

                               (head shake)

                         The dinner's just for nominees.

                         Sure, yeah.

                                             LOIS

Why don't you go pick out your

duds?  I'll run into the bank and

meet you back out here in five.

She heads into the BANK and he goes into the FORMAL WEAR

scans the street for Lois.  She's nowhere in sight.  He

glances through the bank's plate glass window.

   3   CLARK'S POV - THE BANK                                                      3

Through the plate glass window, he sees ALL THE CUSTOMERS

and EMPLOYEES sprawled on the floor, in chairs, over desks.

       Not moving.

                                             CLARK

                         Lois!

He cradles her in his arms and sees she's still breathing.

       Her eyes flutter open.

                                             LOIS

                         Clark...?  What happened...?

She straightens up, woozy, and they look around at all the

Unconscious People, some just beginning to stir.

Then they spot the vault -- wide open and stripped clean.

JIMMY is all the way across the newsroom, watching Lois from

a distance, a sneaky smile on his face.

   7   CLOSE ON LOIS                                                               7

at her desk, on the phone.

                                             LOIS

                               (into phone)

Look, I've talked to your Sergeant,

                         your Detectives and your

                         Lieutenant, now Captain, how can

the police have no leads? ...Oh, I

see, you _have_ them but you won't

                         share.  Didn't your mother teach

you it's _rude_ not to share?

                         ...Hello?

Hung up on, she glares at the phone and SLAMS it down.  Then

picks up a pen and tries to make some notes.   It's out of

       ink.  Jimmy saunters up.

                                             JIMMY

'Didn't your mother teach you it's

rude not to share?'  Good one.

                                             LOIS

Didn't _your_ mother teach you it's

                         rude to eavesdrop?

                               (scratching pen on

                                paper; no ink)

                         What is _with_ this pen?

                                             JIMMY

                         It's not a pen.

                                             LOIS

Jimmy, if this is some Zen parable

about pens not being pens and desks

not being desks, I'm not in the

                         mood.

Jimmy takes the pen and uncaps it -- revealing its

       electronic inner works.

                         desk.

                               (pulls a small receiver

                                from his ear)

You listen on this.  Cool, huh?

Got it at Spies R Us.

                                             LOIS

                         Super-hearing for sale.

                                             JIMMY

                         Not super-super, it's only got a

range of about five hundred feet.

But here's a cool thing, see this

                         switch? AM/FM radio...

Clark bursts in, clutching a videotape.

                                             CLARK

                         Got it.

He moves to the bank of TV monitors on the wall and pops the

tape into the VCR.  Lois and Jimmy follow.

                                             LOIS

                         What?

                                             CLARK

                         Video from the bank security

cameras.  Now maybe we'll find out

why the police have such a tight

                         lid on this thing.

They all gather round the set.

                                                                  INTERCUT:

   8   ON TV - THE BANK                                                            8

Seen from the HIGH ANGLE of the security camera the morning

of the robbery.  Customers are in line, Employees at their

stations.  Lois stands at a Teller's window in the

foreground.  Quiet chatter, Muzak.  Then, a strange SOUND:

       Eerie, seductive, almost melodic.

People in the bank begin to wilt like water-starved flowers,

       then drop, one by one.

8A   BACK TO LOIS, CLARK AND JIMMY                                              8A

watching, curious.  Clark turns up the STRANGE SOUND on the

TV and Lois' eyes get heavy, Jimmy starts to yawn.

FOUR MEN in black jumpsuits enter.  They are all wearing

the swift purpose of thieves, stepping over the sleeping

bodies, heading right for cash drawers and the big, locked

They turn their attention back to --

  8F   ON TV - THE BANK                                                           8F

At the far corner of the bank, a GUARD enters from a back

room, sees the Thieves and draws his gun.

And the Leader of the Thieves, heretofore known as THE SOUND

MAN, draws _his gun_ -- part pistol, part satellite

       emanates.  The Guard keels over.

                                             LOIS

No, I think Yanni did it _first_.

                                             CLARK

I can see why the police don't want

                                             LOIS

Okay, all right, whatever.  So this

                         guy _said_...

                                             CLARK

He talked a lot about frequency.

He said that every object has its                          (X)

                                             SOUND MAN (V.O.)
