  1   EXT. A MIDTOWN METROPOLIS SKYSCRAPER - NIGHT #1                            1

one of the tallest in the city.  From inside its penthouse,

the sudden WHOMPH of an EXPLOSION, then FLAMES flicker

      behind the windows.

  2   EXT. PENTHOUSE TERRACE - NIGHT                                             2

Through curtained French doors, we glimpse FLAME and smoke,

spreading.  A WOMAN stands in the doorway, her curving back

to us, holding a lit lighter.  A trendily smooth Euro-man

named ROLF steps up behind her.  Neither seems at all

      concerned by the fire.

                                          ROLF

                      Nice work.

                                          WOMAN

                             (clicks off lighter)

                      Thanks.

                                          ROLF

                                          WOMAN

Six, maybe seven minutes.  How do I

                      look?

                                          ROLF

                      Fabulous. Naturally.

She turns and steps into the light, a striking beauty with

the soul of a born predator:  DIANA STRIDE.  Rolf opens a

compact so she can inspect her face.

 46  INT. DAILY PLANET - PIT - CONTINUOUS                                       46

Mayson strides out, Lois and Clark follow.

                                          LOIS

                      What does that mean?

                                          CLARK

It means maybe we stepped over the

                      line.

                                          LOIS

_We_ didn't, I did, is that what

                                          CLARK

Lois, whatever one of us does, the

                      other takes responsibility for.

That's what being partners is all

                      about.

                                          LOIS

                      Okay.  Well, we've got a little                             (X)

time here.  If we can ID who's

trying to kill her witness, that

might get her off our backs.

Mayson moves up to the elevators as the doors slice open and

out steps Perry and Jimmy with Diana, all three laughing and

having a great time as Mayson gets on.

                                          LOIS (CONT'D)

Huh.  Speak of the devil.                                   (X)

Lois gets a gleam in her eye.

                                          LOIS (CONT'D)

                      I've got an idea.

She whispers in Clark's ear, then moves to her desk.  Diana,

Perry and Jimmy cross the pit to Perry's office.

                                          DIANA

                             (as the laughter

                              subsides)

... Perry, you've got to tell that

Clark is there with JONATHAN, who strains to lift a big

metal box.  Clark picks it up with one hand and moves it

across the room to MARTHA, dressed in greasy overalls,

standing among a web of cables, a computer, a

high-tech-looking video camera and two black boxes on

     tripods.

                                          CLARK

                      Lois is onto something.  Diana

                      Stride's not what she seems.

                                          MARTHA

Too bad.  Your father always had a

                                          CLARK (CONT'D)

My name is Clark Kent.  I'm sure

 95  SUPERMAN                                                                   95

has just landed on the ledge in front of the Planet Globe.

                                          SUPERMAN

Clark Kent is a friend.  My
