INT. DAILY PLANET - DAY #1 1
As LOIS exits the elevator, JIMMY falls in stride next to
her, holding a wrapped gift.
JIMMY
You're cuttin' it close.
LOIS
(off her watch)
Eight minutes. What'd I get him?
JIMMY
Checked suspenders. Did you
remember the card?
She stops, stricken.
LOIS
Oh, no...
JIMMY
(produces a card, in
envelope)
Who's your buddy? Who's your pal?
I am, aren't I?
She gives his cheek a pinch and takes the card. They head
into the bullpen -- it's festooned with ribbons, balloons
and a banner reading: "Happy Birthday, Chief!" CLARK
appears.
CLARK
Morning, Lois.
LOIS
You're late.
CLARK
'Morning, Clark.'
(removing a wrapped gift
from bag)
What'd you get him?
LOIS

CLARK
Didn't you give him that last year?
LOIS
(realizes, covering)
Well, he liked them, didn't he?
At that moment, an odd looking fellow (H.G. WELLS) steps off
the elevator. He looks like a dapper, bespectacled
turn-of-the-century English gentleman. He spots Lois and Clark and
heads straight for them.
WELLS
Excuse me... I'm H.G. Wells.
Lois and Clark share a look.
WELLS (CONT'D)
And I've run into a spot of
trouble. I've been traveling with
a companion in my time machine...
Now Lois and Clark share a sigh. A nut job.
WELLS (CONT'D)
... and we've just come back from
the future, I've left him in the (X)

LOIS
(to Clark)
If this is a gag, you're dead.
WELLS
... we stopped here because --
CLARK
Sir, we're a little busy, so let's
wrap this up -- time travel isn't
possible, H.G. Wells wrote
fiction...
(trying to lead Wells
away)
... and died in 1946.
WELLS

I know you're Superman and I need
your help.
Clark stares at him, stunned.

Lois and Clark and Wells.
CLARK
Look, Lois, there's no reason for
both of us to go.
LOIS
There's no reason for one of us to
go.
CLARK
So --
LOIS
So what'd he really say to you,
Clark?
(to Wells)
And if you really have some guy
from the future with you, why'd you
leave him in the park?
WELLS
I didn't want him to see the city.
You see, the twenty-second century (X)
is a peaceful, harmonious Utopia.
No violence, no crime. Without
preparation, poor Tempus would be
horrified by the savagery of the
1990s... (X)

alley, curious. The Mugger shoves past him and takes off.
The Man gets to his feet, shaken.
TEMPUS
What just happened here... is
called... a mugging?
MAN
No kidding. He got everything but
my watch. (X)
TEMPUS
Not a very successful mugging.
Let's see if I can do better.
Tempus shoves the man into the wall, pins his throat with
one hand and rips the watch off with the other.
TEMPUS (CONT'D)
(a triumphant grin)
Excellent! I just mugged you!
MAN
Are you outta your mind?
TEMPUS
No... my century.
He throws the man across the alley, sending him crashing

4 EXT. STREET - DAY 4
As Lois, Clark and Wells walk along the sidewalk.
LOIS
(heavy with skepticism)
... and why did this Tempus come
back with you from the future? (X)
WELLS
He volunteered, actually. You see,
I have a sort of club of fellow
inventors back in England. And
I've never been quite able to
convince them that my time machine
was functional. So I wanted to
bring Tempus back as proof.
LOIS
(to Clark)
I think we should cut our losses.
CLARK
(quickly)
Good idea. Why don't you go back
to the office?
He makes a move to follow Wells. She stops him.
LOIS
You don't actually believe this
guy?
CLARK
No, I'm just...
LOIS
... what?
CLARK
... curious.
LOIS
So am I. How'd he get your

There's a JOURNAL on the seat, which Wells picks up off the (X)

WELLS
Let me show you my problem, so you

Full of a startling display of weapons. The gold-chained
GUN SHOP OWNER showing his wares to Tempus, the proverbial
kid-in-the-candy-store.
GUN SHOP OWNER
Got your shotguns, your long guns,
your semi-automatics...
TEMPUS

GUN SHOP OWNER

behind some big bushes we hear the familiar HUM of the time
machine, sees the lights and color SEAR through the leaves,

Lois and Clark step out of the bushes, a little dazed.
LOIS

CLARK
Yeah, but the cars...
She looks. All circa early-to-mid-sixties.
LOIS
And the clothes.
WOMEN and MEN, all dressed and styled for a spring

trashcan and scans the date: May 17, 1966.

21 INT. RED EYE SALOON - SMALLVILLE, 1866 - DAY 21
The Old Timer's back at the piano, the cowboys are at their
cards, Marshall Kent's leaning on the bar. The debris of
the balcony railing has been gathered neatly to the side.
Miss Martha is on the balcony, hammer in her hand, a
carpenter's apron around her waist, hard at work installing
a temporary guard rail.
MISS MARTHA

Clark!
He sees the way she's staring at him. He looks down at his
hands and knows instantly what's happening.
CLARK
It's Tempus...
Lois floors it.

35 EXT. ROCKY COVE - DAY 35
Tempus, Wells and the Baby are well concealed in this
semi-circle of large boulders. Wells' hands are tightly (X)
secured. Unable to move, he watches the Baby playing with (X)
a glowing shard of KRYPTONITE. Tempus is cleaning his (X)
weapon. He looks down at the Baby.
WELLS
Don't do this, Tempus... (X)
TEMPUS
I'm not doing a thing, Herb. (X)

Does baby like the nice shiny (X)
Kryptonite? Hm? Well, okay, you (X)

FADE IN:
36 EXT. COUNTRY ROAD - DAY 36
With Lois at the wheel, the rental pulls to a stop at the
edge of the woods. Clark points in the direction of Rocky
Cove.
CLARK
Over there...
Lois gets out and hurries around to Clark's side. He tries
to get out, but he's far too weak. She reaches for his
hand. It's beginning to disappear.
LOIS
(horrified)
Clark, what's happening? (X)
CLARK
In a minute, I won't exist... (X)
You'll have to go without me.
Hurry!
With a last worried glance, Lois plunges into the woods.
37 EXT. WOODS - DAY 37
Lois picks her way through the underbrush, stepping lightly,
trying to be as silent as possible. As she pushes a branch
out of her way, a GLINT from the bushes catches her eye.
She peers in. Something's hidden there. It's the Time
Machine.
TEMPUS
(singing, O.S., to the
tune of 'Rock-A-Bye
Baby')
'Oh, Super-baby, new to the
Earth...'
38 EXT. ROCKY COVE - DAY 38
Tempus croons evilly to the weakened Infant, as the bound
and gagged Wells watches.
TEMPUS
'...play with your rock and make
pointless your birth.'
The Baby's eyes flutter.

TEMPUS (CONT'D)
Won't be long now... (X)
WELLS
You really think you can destroy (X)
Utopia by killing a child? (X)
TEMPUS
Well, as you can see, I'm giving (X)
it my best. (X)
WELLS
You're a fool. Kill as many as (X)
you wish -- but a world of peace (X)
will always be man's ultimate (X)
goal. (X)
TEMPUS
Herb... did your books actually (X)
_sell_? Because, you're kind of a (X)
bore. Which brings me to the (X)
question... (X)
(beat)
What am I going to do with you? I
could just leave you here to
starve... but no, you might get (X)
away, build another time machine. (X)
Obviously, I have to kill you, but (X)
how? (X)
(then)
Something suitable, something (X)
ironic... like what I did to Lois,
that was good. Wait, yes -- a
Utopian execution. I know, I'll (X)
bore you to death!
Tempus laughs at his own joke, then stops abruptly. He
hears a noise. Someone moving nearby. He grabs his gun (X)
and goes to investigate.
39 EXT. WOODS - DAY 39
Tempus approaches, carrying his gun. He moves cautiously,
looking every which way, but Lois is nowhere to be seen. He
stops. He was sure he heard something, but maybe not.

She ends up on her back. Tempus aims down at her.
TEMPUS
How did you get -- ?
(realizes)
Another time machine. Where is it?
(she says nothing)
You _will_ tell me.
He aims at her knee and is about to pull the trigger.
39A EXT. ROAD - DAY 39A
Clark musters his strength and stumbles into the woods.
40 EXT. WOODS - DAY 40
An almost fully transparent Clark stumbles and can just
glimpse what's happening between Tempus and Lois. He's too
weak to move, but summons the very last drop of his strength
and blows out a burst of SUPER COLD BREATH.
41 EXT. WOODS - DAY 41
Tempus' gun FREEZES, turning white with frost. Tempus
SCREAMS and drops it.
Lying before him, Lois hooks her right foot behind Tempus'
right ankle, then kicks his shin with her left foot. He
tumbles back.

43 EXT. WOODS - DAY 43
Lois rolls up, ready to do some damage. Tempus gets to his
feet. The gun is between them.
LOIS
Okay, you like violence so much...
let's see what you've got.
They circle. He swings at her. She blocks, connects with
an uppercut... and drops him. Hard. (X)

WELLS
The baby... is he... ?
Lois is not exactly an instinctive mom. She holds the baby
at arms length, then tentatively brings it in closer to a
more nurturing, if still awkward, embrace. The Baby looks
up at her... and begins to cry.
LOIS

TEMPUS (CONT'D)

Lois and Wells -- holding the Baby -- come out of the cove.
LOIS

She nestles against Clark as he still holds Tempus with one

TEMPUS

Then he SPINS and in a BLUR goes from Clark to Superman. He

Wells has secured Tempus to the time machine. He moves to a

WELLS
What's the matter, my dear?
LOIS
You've been to the future, Mr.
Wells, is it true what Tempus said
about me?
WELLS
Yes. You're as highly revered as

makes your story so timeless: why
children never tire of hearing it

it comes to love, especially that

choking on my own vomit.
Superman LANDS.
SUPERMAN
Everything's fine, the Kents have
the baby.
WELLS
Good. Then we can start to make
things right. Superman, you and
Lois meet me at the second time
machine.
He climbs into his time machine, starts hitting switches.
LOIS
Where are you going?
WELLS
To see to it Mr. Tempus causes no
more trouble.
The machine hums and color flashes appear.
TEMPUS
Superman, while I've got you here,
just answer one thing for me...
Superman walks over. The two men are nose to nose.

Lois and Clark move up to the second time machine.

you're Superman from now on?
WELLS
(stepping into sight)
Oh, I'm afraid that can't be, Miss
Lane.
(smiles)
Not just yet, anyway.
He climbs aboard the second machine and mans the controls.
WELLS (CONT'D)
We've tampered with history enough.
CLARK
Well, it's a little late...
WELLS

and none of this will have
happened.
They climb on, each on either side of him as the machine
begins to hum.

Is that what you did to Tempus?
During the following, Lois surreptitiously pulls out Perry's
